Best Fall Weekend Trips for 2026 (Before the Leaves Are Gone)

2026-03-31 · 6 min read

Fall foliage season is one of those things that feels infinite until it is not. The window for peak color at most destinations is two to three weeks, the accommodation options get claimed fast, and by the time most people get around to booking, the best weekends are gone. If you want to do a fall trip right in 2026, the time to start planning is now, even though the leaves will not turn until October.

Here are the six destinations worth putting on your fall list.

Vermont: The Classic, for a Reason

Vermont in mid-October is what most people picture when they imagine fall foliage. The combination of sugar maples, birches, and oaks across rolling hills creates a color palette that genuinely does not look real. The Stowe area, the Mad River Valley, and Route 100 from Waterbury to Morrisville are among the best drives. Woodstock is the most photographed Vermont village and earns the attention. Book accommodations at least two months out for Columbus Day weekend. Peak color typically runs from late September in the north to mid-October in the southern part of the state.

Blue Ridge Parkway: 469 Miles of Peak Color

The Blue Ridge Parkway from Shenandoah in Virginia to Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina has no stoplights, no commercial trucks, and some of the most sustained scenic driving in the eastern United States. Fall color here runs from early October in the higher elevations to early November in the lower. Asheville, North Carolina makes an excellent base for the southern section, with a food scene and hotel options that match the scenery. The Peaks of Otter area in Virginia and the stretch near Milepost 200 through Fancy Gap are particularly spectacular.

Asheville, North Carolina: Fall with Urban Amenities

Asheville earns its own entry beyond the Parkway. The city itself sits at 2,134 feet, which means fall color arrives earlier and the air turns crisp faster than at lower elevations. The arts district, the brewery scene (Asheville has more breweries per capita than anywhere in the US), the restaurant quality, and the walkability of downtown make it an easy long weekend destination that combines excellent fall scenery with a full urban experience. Book a rental home with a mountain view if you can. The mornings are extraordinary.

Hudson Valley, New York: Fall Without Flying

For anyone within driving distance of the Northeast, the Hudson Valley is the most underrated fall destination. The drive from New York City to Cold Spring, Rhinebeck, or Hudson takes about two hours and delivers everything fall should offer: dramatic color on the Catskill foothills, farm stands with apples and cider, small towns with good restaurants, and a pace that is genuinely different from the city. The Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie gives you an elevated view of fall color reflecting off the river. Rhinebeck has some of the best lodging options in the region. Peak color runs from early to mid-October.

Door County, Wisconsin: The Midwest's Best Fall Secret

Door County, the peninsula extending into Lake Michigan from the northern tip of Wisconsin, is one of those fall destinations that people who have been there talk about in a particular way. The combination of Great Lakes water views, cherry orchards in their fall colors, limestone bluffs, and small harbor towns creates a fall experience that is completely different from the classic New England formula but equally worthwhile. Fish Creek and Ephraim are the most charming villages. Peninsula State Park has excellent hiking through color. Peak color runs from late September to mid-October.

Columbia River Gorge, Oregon: Pacific Northwest Fall

The Columbia River Gorge on the Oregon-Washington border offers something none of the other destinations on this list can: waterfalls and fall color together. Multnomah Falls, the most visited natural site in Oregon, is spectacular in any season but extraordinary in October when the surrounding forest is turning. The Historic Columbia River Highway, a National Scenic Byway, connects the major viewpoints and waterfalls. Hood River, about an hour east of Portland, makes an excellent base with a strong food and wine scene (the Hood River Valley has a thriving pear and apple industry that peaks in fall). Peak color runs from mid to late October.
